How treatment works
Personal Assessment & Planning
- Assessment & records — photographs, a 3D scan and X-rays if needed.
- Bonding — small brackets are placed on teeth; a wire is engaged.
- Adjustments — reviews every 6–10 weeks to progress wires and elastics.
- Finishing — detailed bite adjustments and smile refinement.
- Retention — removable and/or fixed retainers to keep the result stable.
Life with metal braces
- Eating: avoid very hard, sticky or chewy foods; cut fruit/veg into small pieces.
- Comfort: mild tenderness after fittings/adjustments is normal; orthodontic wax helps rubbing.
- Oral hygiene: fluoride toothpaste, interdental brushes and mouthwash as advised.
- Sport & music: wear a mouthguard for contact sports; most musicians adapt quickly.
- Breakages: if a bracket loosens or a wire rubs, use wax and contact us.
Metal vs ceramic braces
Ceramic braces blend with teeth for a subtler look; metal braces are slightly more durable and can be marginally lower-friction in some movements. Both straighten teeth effectively—your orthodontist will recommend the best option for your case and preferences.
Treatment Timeline
Most metal brace treatments take 12–24 months depending on complexity and goals. We’ll map out a personalised plan and review progress regularly.
Retention & Aftercare
To keep teeth in their new positions, we use removable retainers and/or a fixed retainer bonded behind the teeth. We’ll provide a simple wear schedule and long-term check plan.
