How Treatment Works
- Assessment & records — photos, a 3D scan and X-rays if needed.
- Bonding — brackets are placed; a wire gently guides movement.
- Adjustments — reviews every 6–10 weeks to change wires/elastic ties.
- Finishing — detail the bite and tooth edges for an even smile.
- Retention — removable and/or fixed retainers to keep teeth stable.
What braces can help with
- Crowding and rotations
- Gaps/spaces
- Overbite (deep bite) and underbite
- Crossbite and open bite
- Impacted or ectopic canines (case-dependent)
- Relapse after earlier orthodontics
Life with braces
- Eating: avoid very hard, sticky or sugary snacks; cut food into small pieces.
- Comfort: mild tenderness is common after fittings/adjustments; simple pain relief as directed helps. Orthodontic wax eases rubbing.
- Brushing: use a fluoride toothpaste and interdental brushes; we’ll show the technique.
- Sport & music: wear a mouthguard for contact sports; most wind/brass players adapt quickly.
- Breakages: if a bracket loosens or a wire rubs, use wax and contact us.
Braces vs aligners for teens
Aligners are removable and discreet, but success depends on consistent wear. Fixed braces are always working and give us full control of complex movements—often the best choice for challenging bites or when compliance may vary. We’ll help you choose what fits your teen’s needs and routine.
Timeline & reviews
Most teen cases take 12–24 months, depending on complexity and growth. Appointments are planned to minimise time away from school; some check-ins can be virtual when appropriate.
Aftercare & retention
Retainers keep teeth settled once braces come off. We’ll fit removable and/or fixed retainers, explain wear schedules, and review stability over time.
